Moved from another blog. I have it listed as a town called Moron but when I googled it, it either doesn’t exist or it a community that I couldn’t find online. The only town close to this name is Marion which is below Fort Wayne, Indiana which is about 45 minutes from the Ohio line. Which I’m pretty sure is not right because I believe I was close to the Illinois line. The area from Fort Wayne to Ohio is not on an interstate. It is US route 31 if I remember correctly.
I’m not sure exactly where I stopped. I remember I stopped at a rest area which was near a cow pasture and it smelled very bad. This was back when I had monthly cramps and when they hit I had to find a liquor store because vodka is the only thing that helped me. I would head straight to an ABC, package store or whatever the state calls their liquor stores. It’s different in every state. For instance, Michigan calls it a party store. In North Carolina it’s an ABC store. In South Carolina it may be called an ABC store or a package store. In Missouri, it’s just plain old liquor store. I found that out one year when I stopped in Festus, MO. I asked someone in Walmart and she directed me towards a birthday party store because they’d never heard(or at least she hadn’t) the term ABC store.
Whenever it got that time of the month and I would always start hurting real bad I knew I needed something to drink and vodka was my choice. Other alcoholic beverages like gin, rum or tequila worked too but gin tended to give me acid reflux real bad. I gave up rye whiskey and bourbon many years ago. Wine nor beer never worked. I would use this opportunity to try different brands of vodka because stores in different states had different types. I always chose 80 proof. If the store had Mr. Boston’s which is 100 proof I’d get it. I learned over the years to pace myself so I didn’t get sick but I was always in so much pain that I had to drink a lot to ease it. I also knew to find a truck stop where I could park for two or three days without anyone bothering me. On occasion I would stop at Walmart if I had to but I avoided it if I could because I had to walk farther and I hated walking in and out of the store a bunch of times. It’s not that noticeable in truck stops because there are so many truckers there and sometimes they have to stay a few days until they get another load or get down time. I knew better than to drive and I never had any issues.
If I had to stop somewhere like I did at this rest area I would make sure I was sober when I hit the road and would wait until I found a truck stop. Sometimes this required me driving farther than I wanted. As soon as I stopped and knew I wasn’t leaving for a couple of days I’d start drinking always pacing myself and eating. I would get online or sleep. I did a lot of that when I was in pain and drinking. Fortunately, it never lasted over two, sometimes three days. One time in Arkansas, I had to stay at a rest area for a few days because I was sick and in pain from monthly cramps. Obviously, I had some food with me. Way back then I rarely carried anything to eat. I just bought as I went but when I went to Montana there are signs and warnings everywhere to carry food and water and I learned after driving through North Dakota and not being able to find anything to eat not to do that again. I finally found a Dairy Queen which they seem to have a lot of. Now I always have food with me. Tuna, peanut butter, bread, crackers, chips, cereal and granola bars, powerade and water so if I’m out in the middle of nowhere and I get really hungry or I have to stop at a rest area with no stores close by I have food, decent food, I can eat without feeding a snack machine fifteen dollars like one guy had to do and nothing in there is going to really fill you up. In my case it would probably just make me sick. A lot of traveling has taught me to be as prepared as I can. I’ve branched out since then. Now I may carry a can of fruit, beans, salmon, sardines, canned chicken, fresh fruit like apples, grapes and bananas that last for a few days and I often buy fresh fruit like peaches, nectarines, plums and precut fruit like pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, yogurt, lunchables when I’m buying for that day only and other nonperishable food I can eat in a pinch. I’ve added to my collection of food that can be kept unrefrigerated like pickled cabbage, canned sauerkraut, pickles, chow chow, etc. that is good on tuna.
This is a cool old house in Moron, Indiana. I went through there back in early 2013. I remember I was hurting real bad and not feeling so well. I got out at the Indiana welcome center early in the morning about 5:30 or 6 AM and it smelled terrible. There was apparently a cow pasture nearby.
I returned to Illinois last year but I spent no time in Indiana. I stopped at one rest area. I hope to get back maybe this year when I get a break from caring for my aunt in Tennessee. Once I get that break I’m hoping to go to Arkansas since it’s so close to Memphis and also go back to Marianna, Florida. I was there when I had to leave abruptly.
One of the other nonperishable foods I eat when I’m on the road are these chicken salad snack packs. I learned, however, that you can’t keep them for very long. I try to eat them right away and only keep them for a week or two before consuming them.
I also eat a lot of tuna and prefer it. I always buy tuna pouches because I can’t eat a can of tuna in one serving and I’m afraid to store it in the car overnight. I’m sure it would last but it might not and I can’t eat a pouch in one meal. Plain tuna lasts better in pouches. I keep it for weeks, sometimes months in the pantry and have kept it in the car for several weeks although I try not to. If I want flavored tuna I only get one or two pouches and eat it up within the week. This is if it’s in my car where temperatures can fluctuate. At home I keep it in the pantry where it lasts for a long time just like canned tuna.
Sardines are another good option. I like them with a little mustard. I read online that you can eat two to three servings of tuna a week but different kinds of fish is recommended. Last year I started eating chili beans on the road for protein although I eat a lot of greek yogurt for the calcium and protein. I ate the beans cold and they weren’t bad. They’re better hot but I was looking for something different and beans fit the bill. White chili beans are good too. Or if you’d rather just eat out the whole time you’re traveling the country Road Food will tell you all the cool restaurants you can stop at in America.
