Coyote In Death Valley National Park California~RH Jones Page

These pictures were taken in February 2016. I don’t remember where I boondocked but I woke up very early in the morning and couldn’t go back to sleep. I was probably at the Walmart in Pahrump, Nevada because this is where I slept almost every night I was in this area. Although one time I stopped at a rest area. There was a Shell gas station nearby where I would buy a brownie almost every morning because I knew I wouldn’t be there that long so I wouldn’t be eating very many of them.

I’m not sure why I didn’t sleep but since I woke up early I decided to drive one more time through Death Valley. There is a ghost town in Nevada I wanted to explore. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the name of the town but it isn’t too far from Death Valley and not too far from a truck stop that doesn’t stay open all night. I did stay there one night however. On this occasion I started out from the California side(rather Pahrump NV side) and headed towards this ghost town. I drove through very early. It was still dark. I almost hit several coyotes before the sun rose. I drove very slowly because there was no one on the road and finally the sun rose and I snapped these photos. They were taken with a Samsung Galaxy phone.

Original post: I snapped this photo from my car window in Death Valley National Park. I think someone has been feeding the coyotes there. When I pulled to the side of the road they both(one more than the other) came running right up to my vehicle. I wasn’t about to get out. I wanted to but decided perhaps that might not be such a good idea so I stayed in my car and took the pictures. When the one got too close to my car I said, “stop” loudly and he stopped. It was apparent they wanted to be fed which is strictly prohibited and not  a good idea as they lose their fear of humans if they ever had any.

These are the best pictures I’ve taken of coyotes.

I very much enjoyed Death Valley and winter is truly the best time to visit. I hiked, explored and took a ton of pictures. I really wanted to go off road but I got to the Jeep rental place too late to rent and planned on going back the next day but for some reason I didn’t make it.

This is also a good book. I’ve read several good ones.

Here’s a link to several other good books on Death Valley.

References: Death Valley National Park ServiceOasis at Death Valley12 Things You Didn’t Know About Death Valley and General Information About Coyotes which you may or may not want to read. It offers some useful information when it comes to coyotes and like any wild animal they can be dangerous so don’t approach them and most importantly don’t feed them. Some people do because they think they’re hungry and they may be but it is their responsibility to find food. If they become too dependent on humans for food they lose their fear of us and become more dangerous. They will eat small dogs, cats and even babies.
