Truck Camper & Class B Tour By Story Chasing~RH Jones Page

While writing a post on my favorite van/SUV/car lifers I found two really cool videos on campers/RVs. This one is about a truck camper. I’ve personally never been very interested in a camper that goes on the back of a pickup truck. I have looked into an insulated truck canopy but not a camper. I was considering a canopy for my truck but after getting it checked out and some work done on it the mechanic told me there was too much to do on it and it just wasn’t worth it. Plus it’s a smaller truck, a four wheel drive, but smaller so it would be limited on the campers it could have held. So I gave this idea up and am still with a car but I’m not on the road full time. When I do eventually go full time I’m going to want a van, at least. I prefer a Class B over anything else. Or a regular converted cargo van. I’ve looked into schoolies as well. Not the big bus kind but a smaller short bus schoolie. The link to the full post is at the bottom.

This woman had a regular Class B before she got the truck camper but with the low clearance she couldn’t get to more remote places so she opted to upgrade to something that would allow her into more remote areas. Her truck is a Dodge Ram 3500 and she did nothing really in the way of upgrading her truck. She added some new springs and that was it. The truck camper she chose is heavier and she put it atop the Ram dually. She said it wasn’t required but works better.
After looking at this truck camper I can say I have to seriously rethink what I may get. So far, I’ve looked at Class B’s and regular custom van’s. Right now, price wise I would rather have a really nice custom van. I don’t have to have a toilet other than a DIY one nor do I really need a kitchen but it would be nice. A bed where I can stretch out is the most important thing to me and having a small DIY toilet for when I boondock in places like Walmart and need a bathroom in the middle of the night should I need one. So far, if I use the restroom before retiring for the night I sleep the whole night through but I need to think about what it will be like when I get older. It might not be so easy. Right now, I avoid Walmart because sometimes I get upset stomach and not having easy access to a bathroom means I have to drive somewhere that has one. This is why I choose truck stops and rest areas mostly.
From time to time I watch videos that do camper tours so I can get an idea of what I want, what I will need and what I can do without. It’s nice to have those extra perks but it’s really about the needs. Being able to cook something would be nice, a bed and bathroom even if just a DIY would be really nice for me. At least for now. A shower would be really nice too but I can do without it because I can go to the gym.
Most of the YouTubers I’ve watched have said the same thing, they do their best not to defecate in their toilets and many still opt for a gym, truck stop or an outdoor shower over using the indoor one because they have to empty those things sooner or later and I’m sure I wouldn’t like it. Besides, for all the years I’ve been traveling and on the road I’ve made do with mostly bird baths, going to the gym or on occasion going to motels. I do just fine washing my hair in the sink at a truck stop, gas station or rest area if it isn’t too busy. If it’s really crowded I’ll wait until the next day or I’ll go into Walmart late, about thirty minutes before closing, and use the family bathroom to wash my hair and clean up. I wash down every day now so I stay a lot cleaner.
I avoid friday and saturday when it comes to hair washing at a truck stop.
Many YouTubers I watch say they wash their hair when their out remotely camping by using a couple of bottles of water which I can do too and have done it. But I see no need when there’s running water in a gas station and I don’t care what other people think. This is one advantage to getting older, you care less about what others think instead choosing what works for you. It has taken time for me to get comfortable with washing my hair in a truck with women coming in and out. There have been times when it got busy and I just had to keep going and no one has ever said anything except one time when I was in a Love’s truck stop and an employee there got upset and told me I needed to use the showers but I was almost done so there was nothing she could do about it. And I think it might have happened one other time where the employee just said the sinks weren’t supposed to be used for hair washing. In some restrooms it’s actually posted above the sinks but I’ve never really paid any attention to it. If I see it I’ll avoid it unless my hair is really dirty then I just take a chance. I keep my hair short so I have a lot less of it to wash and get done quicker. On occasion, I let my hair grow a little but usually I end up cutting it into a pixie cut again because it is just so much easier to clean.
The second camper is a Class B+ called a Born Free and is a 2009. It’s a very nice RV camper. I prefer it over the truck camper. It is just so nice. It’s a little bigger than I’d prefer but I guess when you’re home is on wheel you have to have a little bit of room. This woman said she rented her house out for a year so she going to be on the road for that long but she has a home to go back to. She can stay in her home for a few months then go back out if she wants to. She said she’d camped in it before but nothing more.
I like to explore new things and love to spend 90% of my time on the highways and roads finding new things but the day comes when I need a break like everyone else. It’s impossible to just park an RV in a parking lot somewhere and stay. This lifestyle forced people to move around. Of course with a home on wheels(RV) I could always find a campground and stay awhile but every time I wanted to leave to go to the store unless it’s within walking or bicycling distance I’d need a car and the idea of towing a car with me doesn’t appeal to me. This is one reason I’d rather have a van. This way, it’s a tiny home on wheels but I can also drive it everyday or almost every day if I need to without the need for a regular car.

For those of you that might not be able to buy an RV or even a van and just want more comfort when it comes to camping this would be a good option. This is the one I’m looking at and this rooftop tent gets you off the ground. The bad news is you can’t do this in a truck stop or Walmart or even at a lot or campgrounds. Well, at least places like Harvest Hosts.

A truck canopy is an option too if you’re not ready for an RV or can’t afford one or only want to go camping. I looked at getting a truck canopy for my truck until I was told it needed too much work and I just had to forget it. This canopy is for Dodge Ram but there are canopies for the Nissan Titan, Ford Ranger and others.

This canopy fits the Dodge Ram 1994 to 2017 and is here: https://amzn.to/3H9mHhn

And of course let’s not forget places like Camping World where you can buy campers and RVs.
